Detailed description of Bandon Dunes, Old Macdonald

Bandon Dunes Golf Resort is a resort 72-hole golf facility located in Bandon, Oregon. The facility has four world-class 18-hole golf courses. The courses are the Bandon Dunes, Brandon Dunes Course, Bandon Dunes, Pacific Dunes Course, Bandon Dunes, Pacific Trails Course, and Bandon Dunes, Old Macdonald Course. Some say that there is no other place on earth that has as much outstanding and drop-dead gorgeous golf as Bandon, Oregon. Bandon has four courses ranked by golf pundits and players alike as among the best of the best. Bandon Dunes Golf Resort was created and financed by greeting card baron Mike Keiser.

These four distinctly different courses occupy a beautiful stretch of sand dunes perched 100 feet above the Pacific Ocean. Bandon Dunes and Pacific Dunes feature a dozen holes that run along the bluff overlooking 23 miles of sweeping, undisturbed shoreline. Bandon Trails begins on a massive dune, works its way through open meadows and upland forest, and then finishes in the dunes. Old Macdonald moves through dune to ocean revealing breathtaking views throughout.

Bandon Dunes, Old Macdonald Course __________

The Bandon Dunes, Old Macdonald Course is the fourth of the four Brandon Dunes golf courses. The Old Macdonald Course opened in 2010. The course was designed by Tom Doak and Jim Urbina.

The Bandon Dunes, Old Macdonald Course draws inspiration from America's pioneering golf course architect, Charles Blair Macdonald. Old Macdonald attempts to answer the question, "What would C.B. Macdonald have done today if he were given this piece of land?"

#1 at Old Macdonald is what Tom Doak calls "My favorite opening hole we've ever built." It's called "Double Plateau," a tribute to Macdonald masterworks such as the 11th at National Golf Links and the 17th at Yale. The landing area is spacious, which sets the tone for the rest of the round. Gale-force winds frequently blow through this exposed site. Tee shots may be off target, but wide open fairways mitigate against losing a ball.

Old Macdonald has more ocean views than Bandon Trails, but fewer than Pacific and Bandon Dunes. It also has surprising elevation change - some huge ups and downs - yet it's so skillfully routed, it's a comfortable walk. The massive dune ridges are dotted with incredible gorse. What may stick with you the most are some of the largest greens in creation, complete with rolls and plateaus and backstops of every description.

From many vantage points at Old Macdonald, you see 14 holes laid out below you. There are no trees and there's nothing blocking your view. You see the ocean, you see Pacific Dunes. Once you come up and over the tall blocking dune on No. 3, you're in this big golf playing field until you reach the 17th tee.

The course is big and bold, and the bigness makes it forgiving. The fairways are enormous-it plays like St. Andrews, and St. Andrews is nothing but fun. Players can hit drives virtually anywhere and not only have a play but still make par. It's not that wildness is rewarded-it's just that there are many ways to the green. The fairways are large and forgiving and the greens may be the largest in the world. St. Andrews, renown for its overly large greens has 244,000 square feet of greens. Old Macdonald greens are 8% larger with 261,000 square feet of greens.

Top ten public course for good reason. Fantastic course, fantastic practice facility, fantastic amenities and staff. More than golf at Bandon Dunes. My wife and I visit every year and we have a blast. Great place, great time. If you go...explore. You'll be glad you did. PS...The place is crawling with deer and other wildlife.

I have been plating golf for 15 years. I have had the privilege of playing many great courses. This is the second best course I have ever played (the first is Pacific Dunes). It is the most fun and thought provoking course I have ever played. I could play here everyday.

This was my favorite of the Bandon Family. We played all of them in June of 2011. Huge greens, huge fairways, makes you think. We had 8 golfers on our golf trip and 3 of us likes Old Mac best, 3 likes Pac Dunes, 1 for Bandon Dunes and one for Bandon Trails. So it is all personal preference. Easy course tee to green, but the greens make you think. This course is tough, but veryplayable for all handicappers due to the size of the greens and size of fairways. Course has barely a clubhouse and snack shop and there is a 3 hole stretch I think 9-10-11? That is borderline unfair with high winds and certain pin positions. But I loved it

Old Mac is the 4th course at the Bandon Dunes. It is an homage to C.B. MacDonald, the father of American Golf Course Architecture and each hole is based loosely on a famous hole or feature that Macdonald created or used. We played it twice on our trip. Old Mac and the other three courses at Bandon are worth the trip from anywhere. If you like links golf it is a must play. Bandon and Ballyneal are my favorite places to play golf outside of the UK. Old Mac has the wideset fairways and largest greens of any course I've played (I've played 600). You can putt or bump and run the ball from 100+ yards out. It is sometimes difficult to see where the fairway ends and green begins. Holes 3,7,8, 14,15 and 16 are great holes.

My least favorite of the four courses. Played twice, both days in high winds. Of the four courses, probably the truest links course and it will test your game. Course favors a low handicap player.
